I got this as a gift and the jelly fish do indeed arrive alive. Source: I'm an aquarium interpreter, I've seen the backstage jelly breeding tanks. This also makes them very easy to breed for aquariums, because polyps can live for a very long time even in the wild, you just have a colony of polyps and collect the clones they are producing. this allows for both change and a lot of stability in the jelly genome. So, medusae via sexual reproduction produce polyps, and polyps via cloning produce medusae. they are filter feeders and when they get enough food or it's the right season, they form bud-like structures of clones that are sent off to go become medusae. they will always be polyps for their whole lives. Ok so, those babies? they find a place to anchor to and turn into polyps.
The medusae have two sexes, the males produce a spermatophore, it looks like a string connecting two animals, and the females (of moon jellies anyways) will brood their fertilized eggs until the microscopic planktonic young are ready to swim out. Jellies have a two-stage life cycle, what you see here and what people think of when they think of jellyfish are called the medusae, the other form is called a polyp and it looks like a really tiny anemone (they're related, so this is not surprising). Since the adjustments to the tank have been made, I like this design more than other tank designs. I'm not going to ramble on too long, but they can be kept in these tanks quite well if you put in the work. The jellyfish do best when the salinity is kept at 30ppt/1.023 SG. It is better to feed the jellyfish a half a scoop twice a day versus one scoop once a day because they jellyfish are passive eaters and any extra food will break down at the bottom of the tank. The food that they provide comes with a small scoop. It is important to do water changes weekly because there is no filter on this tank, so any food or debris begins to break down at the bottom. The jellyfish live for about a year, if maintained properly. This problem has been fixed due to the addition of a Bubble Channel plate which protects the jellyfish from hitting the substrate or getting sucked into the Bubble Channel column. The original design of the tank caused many of the jellyfish to die because they would get beat up/torn against the substrate as the circulated about the tank. My job was to take care/breed/ship the jellyfish and I worked with these tanks daily. I made an account just for this because I recently worked for the company that sells this tank.
